HBO and Golden Boy to Announce Canelo Signing

Saul “Canelo” AlvarezOscar De La Hoya, the president of Golden Boy promotions and Ken Hershman of HBO Sports will announce they have signed Saul “Canelo” Alvarez who is 44-1-1 with 31 KOs to a contract with HBO. The length of the contract with the 24-year old is not known, but it likely will be for a minimum of two years.

HBO hopes that Canelo is able to look as strong as he did prior to his only loss to the world’s best fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his less than impressive fights against Erislandy Lara and Austin Trout.

It is obviously somewhat of a gamble on the part of HBO since Canelo still has question marks around his overall ability following his last fight with Lara.

HBO does not need to sign a fighter to a long contract that has to be maneuvered carefully so he is not beaten.

As well as the announcement about the signing of Canelo with HBO, Golden Boy and De La Hoya will announce that the next fight that Canelo has is December 6 against Joshua Clottey

He is the opponent that Golden Boy and Canelo selected following months of searches for the right opponent.

Golden Boy and Canelo passed on options for much bigger, arguably much better, and more dangerous opponents like James Kirkland, Demetrius Andrade or Lara.

It is difficult to figure out why they opted for Clottey, because he is old and not exactly that active amongst fighters over the past 4 years since he received a huge payday in 2010 against Manny Pacquiao

De La Hoya obviously picked Clottey because he is a recognizable name to older boxing fans. Younger fans will not know him, as he has not been televised for four years.

Clottey however provides Canelo with another beatable fighter without a big risk of him being defeated.

With Canelo now with HBO, his audiences will be bigger and he will return to pay per view when facing boxers like Lara or Clottey.
