Manny Pacquiao Decides to Focus on Chris Algieri

manny-pacquiaoManny Pacquiao will return to the ring November 22 at the Cotai Arena in Macau. Pacquiao the WBO welterweight titleholder opted to condition himself on the basketball court rather than the squared circle. He was pumping up his status as celebrity coach in the Philippine Basketball Association further when he opted to play for his Kia squad.

The potential of the stunt to endanger the upcoming fight Pacquiao has with Chris Algieri was the center of attention during Thursday’s media call with the world champion.

Pacquiao who is 56-5-2 with 38 KOs will be facing the undefeated Algieri who is 20-0 with 8 KOs.

Bob Arum the promoter putting on the bout from Top Rank, said that if Pacquiao wanted to try out for even the New York Knicks following the bout on November 22 it would be fine with him.

Pacquiao of course did not think anything of it went he entered the basketball game. He reiterated that basketball remained his favorite sport and for him it is a good workout on one of his rest days.

Algieri will enter the bout as an underdog 8 to 1. Pacquiao says he is prepared for a long touch battle against the 72-inch reach of Algieri who proved he was legit in June when he defeated Ruslan Provodnikov.

The Pacquiao camp has brought in tough sparing partners to keep the titleholder fresh and ready to face the stiff test of Algieri.

Even though he is a significant favorite in the match, he would not commit to a knockout. Pacquiao’s handlers however were confident the champion would score a knockout on November 22. They believe that Algieri’s speed and reach can be negated because he lacks the speed of Manny Pacquiao.

Not looking beyond Algieri who has had to move up in weight for the bout, Pacquiao’s corner believes his future might include returning to 140 pounds where he would have much more pronounced power.
