De La Hoya: Canelo Alvarez Could Fight James Kirkland

Saul “Canelo” AlvarezOscar De La Hoya the president of Golden Boy Promotions has said that a potential opponent for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez the former WBA/WBC Junior Middleweight Champ could be James Kirkland. Alvarez will fight on December 6 in San Antonio at the Alamodome but his opponent is yet to be determined.

Kirkland was originally considered out of the picture for this bout against the 24-year old Alvarez, after he had made an agreement to take on Gabriel Rosado.

However, with that bout now out of the question since Kirkland was not happy with his take in the bout, it now opens up the possibility for him to take on Canelo on December 6.

Kirkland against Canelo would be a decent bout compared to the possibility of Joshua Clottey whose name has been tossed around as a possible opponent for Canelo. Kirkland is at least a legitimate fighter as a junior middleweight at 32-1 with 28 KOs, who has size and good power.

Kirkland actually would have a change to beat Canelo and would not spend more time on the ropes covering up during the 12 rounds as Clottey did versus Manny Pacquiao in his biggest fight four years ago.

Some doubt De La Hoya would agree to sign Kirkland to fight because he is a fighter who would have somewhat of an opportunity to beat Canelo, which would ruin his fight with Miguel Cotto in 2015 on May 5.

De La Hoya likely could make the fight happen, if Canelo were beaten by Kirkland, but fans likely would not want to pay much to see Canelo take on Cotto after losing to Kirkland.

Canelo however has fought more recently that Kirkland who has not stepped into the ring since December of 2013, and with the fight in December, it would be a full year he will have not boxed in an official bout.
